Little Bo-Peep has lost her sheep, Little Boy Blue come blow your horn, and especially, I wonder how many kids learn Mother Goose now, maybe fewer than when I read ‘em to my kids four decades ago, though of course I’d learned dozens as a kid, and maybe now many learn from parents who also learned by hearing, not reading. And "Itsy, bitsy spider went up the garden spout": it's the outdoor yard spout-the British word for "yard" is "garden." And there are more, yet we consider them American nursery rhymes. Speaking of England, these have a distinctly British accent, like "Little Robin Redbreast": that's the British bird, very small, while the American Robin is good-sized for a songbird. That was printed in early Mother Goose books in England, but maybe suppressed (like Sir John Suckling’s “Love is the fart / Of every heart,” 1646) until unearthed in the last few decades. The Real Mother Goose may not include my favorite kids’ rhyme to teach college freshmen.

She had to be a nurse, janitor, musician, philosopher, peacemaker, wrangler, fire stoker, baseball player, professor, and poet for less than $50 a month. The school teacher, sometimes slightly older than her pupils, was a renaissance individual. When they arrived on their first day of school they may have only known how to speak a foreign language but they soon learned how to speak, read, spell, and write English. They got to school on foot, on horseback, or in a wagon. The children who attended ranged in age from five to 21 and endured dust storms, prairie fires, and cattle drives swirling past the school house in order to get an eighth grade education. They were called names like Prairie Flower, Buzzard Roost, and Good Intent. For a hundred years, white frame or native stone one-room schoolhouses dotted the section corners across Kansas. Were I not buck naked, I would’ve followed right then. I yanked it open only to find the hallway empty except for a fiery trail of footprints. Took some effort, but I got up and inched my way to the door with legs as steady as rubber bands. Listened to the creaks and groans of the house. By turns illuminating, emotional, and darkly humorous, Good Mourning is a lesson in how the human heart grieves and grows-whether you’re wearing this season’s couture or drug-store flip-flops. Meyer has seen it all: two women who found out their deceased husband (yes, singular) was living a double life, a famous corpse with a missing brain, and funerals that cost more than most weddings. Starting as a receptionist, Meyer quickly found she had a knack for helping people cope with their grief, as well as creating fitting send-offs for some of the city’s most high-powered residents. Good Mourning offers a behind-the-scenes look at a legendary funeral chapel on New York City’s Upper East Side-mixing big money, society drama, and the universal experience of grieving-told from the unique perspective of a fashionista turned funeral planner.Įlizabeth Meyer stumbled upon a career in the midst of planning her own father’s funeral, which she turned into an upbeat party with Rolling Stones music, thousands of dollars worth of her mother’s favorite flowers, and a personalized eulogy. Elizabeth Meyer’s “sweet, touching, and funny” ( Booklist) memoir reads as if “Carrie Bradshaw worked in a funeral home a la Six Feet Under” ( Publishers Weekly, starred review). Rick & Morty’s first season featured most of the show’s clearest nods to King, but sometimes the ambitious meta-comedy managed to nestle one reference inside another. As a result, Rick & Morty spends almost as much of its screen time spoofing horror as it does sci-fi, as proven by the show’s many nods to the works of prolific Lisey's Story author Stephen King, particularly in its earlier seasons. This trend looks set to continue with the fifth season, whose trailer features a nod to kaiju movies and Clive Barker’s cult 80s horror Hellraiser. However, although Rick & Morty is mainly interested in parodying sci-fi tropes, the show has also regularly taken swipes at horror media. This may seem surprising, as Rick & Morty’s setup of a scientific super-genius and his dim-witted grandson shares more creative DNA with sci-fi TV than horror literature. One cultural figure whose work has been spoofed endless times on Rick & Morty is The Shining scribe, Stephen King. Related: Every Reveal In Rick & Morty’s Third Season 5 Trailer In the most recent season alone, Rick & Morty parodied everything from Game of Thrones and its obsessive fan base to Ridley Scott’s Alien prequel Prometheus. However, the show has never stopped spoofing all manner of genre fare despite its growing profile. In the years since these humble beginnings, Rick & Morty has earned both critical acclaim and a massive fan base. Performed by Sassymouth, a troupe of dexterous actors who worked previously with Fisher at Berkeley University, the play has received unanimously great reviews. Sold out houses have forced the hit to continually extend it's San Francisco run, moving from venue to venue for over a year. However, the response to John Fisher's farcical satire, Medea, the Musical, has been anything but tragic. The idea of a musical version of Euripedes' Medea, a Greek drama about an abandoned princess who seeks revenge on her unfaithful husband by killing their kids, seems tragic in and of itself. Through meticulous research of the newly completed Lincoln Legal Papers, as well as of recently discovered letters and photographs, White provides a portrait of Lincoln’s personal, political, and moral evolution. White, Jr., offers a fresh and compelling definition of Lincoln as a man of integrity–what today’s commentators would call “authenticity”–whose moral compass holds the key to understanding his life. However, Barbara Demick‘s book is more of a collection of stories, told through the prism of someone who knows the political situation well and could define the difference between what the defectors were experiencing, and what they knew about the world, versus what was actually happening. Hyeonseo Lee tells her own experiences, the life as she knew it, the world as she was taught to view it. Ultimately, now I can say that the difference between the two books is mostly in the way they view the subject. I debated with myself whether I need another book for my book world trip, but what set my mind was the idea, that while Nothing to Envy is a story told through a “middle man”, The Girl with Seven Names is an autobiography. This is the second book that I have read, which tells the stories of North Korean defectors, the first being Nothing to Envy. ( Author: Hyeonseo Lee) + ( Year: 2015) + ( Goodreads) It kind of softened the exit for me somewhat. So it was nice knowing that even though I wasn’t normally playing Peter again, that I did get to go back and still feel part of the show. That was good for me, because the day we shot, I wanted to go and celebrate with everyone, but I had to go straight to the airport for a friend’s wedding. Was it strange to have to come back in additional episodes as Pugachev, Peter’s hired look-alike? And then towards the end of the day, Tony brought a little bottle of vodka and he was like, “Come over here, guys.” We had a little goodbye toast and then shot the final shot, which was actually us sitting on a log looking out on-it wasn’t an ice lake we filmed in a field, and that was all digital-but looking out across this ice lake as those two characters. Throughout the day, there was a lot of trying to keep emotions in check. I remember the first rehearsal of that scene, I started crying, and then that set Elle off. What was it like on that final day of shooting as Peter before he fell through the ice? Elle says some vodka may have been involved. Perhaps Peter is about to change his mind and everything can be reversed. And the brilliant thing of it being unexpected Peter dies not through some murderous plot, but as an act of faith. There’s a part of you that’s really rooting for them to be together, even though when you look at the facts on paper, they probably shouldn’t be. What’s heartbreaking about him when he does go, is that they really do understand each other. |
